2009 Bar Quest week 5

2009 Bar Quest Main Page

Tuesday Jan 27th
Cafe Chuckles, 1335 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. I heard a rumor that Margot was bartending here now so I decided to pop in for lunch. You may know Margot from the Fulton Bar (when it was good) and the 915 Cafe. I've always liked Chuckles for their food and their frozen mugs of beer. Honestly, I'd drink here more often if it wasn't for the clowns. You see... they are everywhere, on the walls, on the floor, parachuting in from the ceiling. It is quite disturbing. I'm not like Kramer, I'm not scared of clowns... just, I think there is something really creepy about grown men hiding their identity to play with children. Personally, I'm hoping the Obama administration will send them all to Gitmo.

Wednesday Jan 28th
graphic courtesy of lancaster@nightThe Village Niteclub, 205 N. Christian Street, Lancaster. Dark Mark, Meaghan, and I ventured to the Village after happy hour (and after lucky dog). Why? We don't know. With Mark and I being 41 and 39 respectively, it felt kind of creepy for us to be going into the Village on a Wednesday night, and once inside it was creepy. We felt like chaparones at a school dance. The Lancaster County Snow-Hysteria seemed to keep many patrons away advised one of the bartenders who stated that normally Wednesday nights would have 3x the crowd. However, I for one like it when places aren't busy as I can get my drinks faster - so I win. Venturing to the bathroom at the village is always a treat. You always feel like livestock walking into doom as the bathroom is always crowded, the floor is always wet, and there is a big drain hole in the middle of the floor (yes, I'm obsessed with bathrooms. Normally I get pics, but since there was 8 guys in there I thought it might be a bit odd if I pulled out my blackberry).

Thursday Jan 29th
Iron Hill Brewery, 781 Harrisburg Ave, Lancaster PA 17603 717-291-9800, www.ironhillbrewery.com . 19 degrees out on a Wednesday and once again... the plan was to stay in, but a friend was visiting from out of state so my arm got slightly twisted, and I decided to venture out to the Iron Hill.  I've been to Iron Hill about 10x since they openend and have had good experiences each time. The bar staff is efficient and they always have a great selection of their own micro-brews (Plus a full bar). I enjoyed a Belgian Grand CRU, Raspberry Wheat, Munich Dunkel, and a Big Red Wibby. Use caution... some of these beers have a very high ABV. Even though I'm a seasoned drinker microbrews have a slightly different effect on me. Oh, and if you have too many and are trying to be responsible and not drive home* - TELL THE MANAGEMENT. They are now towing cars left in the lot after 3am. Let the management know and they shouldn't tow it.

*By being responsible, I mean: When you tell a member of the opposite sex, "Hey, I'll drive you home so you'll be safe. We'll come back to get your car in the morning (after I do bad things to you)"

Saturday Jan 31st
Carlos and Charlies, 2039 Columbia Ave, Lancaster PA 17603 717-399-1912. I got done work early and thought I'd sneak out an try to knock another bar off my list and tonight's victim was Carlos & Charlies. Though the name seems similar, this has no connection to Natalee Halloway's favorite dive. (Lancaster's has an &, Aruba's has an -n- )

I sat down and ordered a Dos Equis on draft and it was just scrumptious. I'm not sure what it is about some draft beers, but this one with a lime just hit the spot. For a meal I age some of their world famous Charlie Wings. Amazing. Once again, if we ever have any sort of official "best wing" competition, these guys are in the running.
